It has been said that retrospection is the sport of the aged and infirm. This website tells a tale of pedalling exploits undertaken when already old and infirm.
With the completion of the Dundee to Inverness tour, a circuit of the British coastline is more or less complete. There may be the odd corner missing, where we took a bit of a shortcut and missed out a headland, but I do not know, and do not particularly care, who writes the rules for a round Britain cycling tour. Any gaps can be closed in the next year or so, while consideration is also given to the Orkneys, Shetlands, Isle of Man and Anglesey.
The journey took just shy of 8 years from when we started in Land's End and, although it took 6 years to get to John O'Groats, we speeded up after the pandemic was over, the east cost being much flatter, and straighter. The circuit involved 105 days pedalling, over 5,000 miles in distance, and nearly 260,000 ft of elevation (about 9 Everests). We did it over 16 separate trips, taking our time to really enjoy the different parts of the country and its wonderful coastline.
Sadly my cycling partner, Den, knackered himself by falling off his bike in preparation for the last leg, and was unable to complete the Dundee to Inverness tour. But I'm sure he'll be back next year to finish that.
In the meanwhile plans are afoot for the last section of the Ireland coastline, also scheduled for 2026. After that who knows?
