Hadrian's Way

Only our second long distance ride, shortly after having completed the Walney to Wearside Coast-to-Coast. I was anxious about my right leg, which was strapped up, because I had lacerated my calf on the c2c because of my complete incompetence with cleats, which I’d never used before… “What could possibly go wrong?”, they said. We started with a good soaking on our way to Silloth, which was a quaint seaside resort from a bygone era, and finished in Newcastle in bright sunshine. On day 2 we stopped in Haltwhistle for breakfast and the lady in the café said she was just helping out for a friend but normally lived in Beverley. I found out that her dentist was Swaby’s, told her my daughter had just got a job there, and asked her to say hello next time she was in. About two months later, she duly did so, much to Bryony’s surprise and the amusement of the other staff.
The Roman ruins were a nice diversion and I remember a horrible climb near Vindolanda. Just the one blow-out.
