On Lewis we have a great rental
Where the hills are rolling and gentle
But we start where we finished
So our ride’s not diminished
A regime that is driving us mental.
At Aird Asaig we start a long climb
The sun on the mountains sublime
We keep turning the cogs
Past the lakes and the bogs
And wish it’s like this all the time.
The road opens onto a plateau
So we stop to take a quick photo
There, riding a thermal
On instincts eternal
An eagle seeks prey-on-the-go.
As we near halfway on our course
I am struck by the scent of the gorse
A deep yellow flower
Accounts for the power
Of a fragrance with no remorse.
We turn to the left for Callanish
And I decide to practise my Spanish
“Yo tengo un abrigo
Y también un amigo”
The only words I have that don’t vanish.
More than five thousand years ago
Came Callanish Standing Stones
How did a primate
Survive in this climate?
No gortex, no electric, no phones!
Another day in which we could revel
And I’m telling you this on the level
We never came near
To needing wet-weather gear
Den must’ve sold his soul to the devil.
