A feature we saw on TV
Described the wonders of Spurn
Shifting sands, and birds of the sea
Where I never thought to return
At the Vic we enjoyed Big Big Sky
A play about love and loss
Featuring the Kilnsea cafe
And the sight of an albatross
So I polled a number of friends
With holiday destinations to boast
Peru, Japan, the Ardennes
Never been to Spurn Heritage Coast
I decide to gather the facts
Of this native wilderness land
Where we’ll pedal a while on tracks
For the lighthouse, we’ll take to the sand
We start brightly at Patrington
Flying along a smooth surface
Till we turn South West at Easington
Where the wind hits us full in the face
It’s a gloriously quiet lane
Few drivers, just the curiously idle
For the discovery centre they aim
And a place that’s intriguingly tidal
After lunch we head up to Withernsea
No time for tea in the pavilion
Then a blustery stretch to the BnB
And supper, in Hull, at the Brazilian
At Spurn Point we see Bull Sand Fort,
Hale Sand Fort on the other side
Between a net was strung taut
To stop u-boats getting to Humberside
As we walk the warning signs flash
For the brown-tail moth caterpillar
It can give you a nasty rash
But the sandy trudge back’s the real killer.
